Let’s be honest here, there isn’t exactly a lack of choice in the market these days when it comes to pickups is there? Despite this, and despite how great today’s pickups are on the whole, there’s always someone out there that wants something that isn’t available. While it’s easy to see why pickup versions of some Jeep and Land Rover models would make a lot of sense, there’s still a lot of love out there for the considerably less practical and capable El Camino.
There have been a number of valiant attempts by tuners to come up with more up-to-date takes on the legendary El Camino, such as Mad Dog Racing’s pretty cool BMW E92 M3 pickup recently. However, nobody appears to have done something similar with a Tesla as far as we know, but the company itself might actually beat the tuners to it in the end.
Before you get all excited about the prospect of buying the Tesla pickup you see here though, it’s probably worth pointing out that this is only a rendering by RainPrisk and not a real vehicle. If Tesla was to build a pickup, you’d have to think it’s unlikely to go along the lines of what we see here.
Tesla boss Elon Musk isn’t a stupid man by any means, and comments he made to CNN in 2013 offer an intriguing insight into his thoughts about a possible pickup in the future. Musk said to CNN, “If you’re trying to replace the most gasoline miles driven, you have to look at what people are buying. That’s the best-selling car [F-150] in America. If people are voting that’s their car, then that’s the car we have to deliver.”
A Tesla pickup might sound like a pretty mad idea, but with even the likes of Mercedes-Benz getting in on the act now, don’t rule it out somewhere down the line.
