It looks like, after 115 years, the Ford guys might actually know what they’re doing. Check out the stunning Ford Fusion Sport that’s set to hit showrooms late this summer.
That’s right, folks. We’re talking about a Ford Fusion. This one isn’t the run-of-the-mill grocery-getter family cars. The Ford Fusion Sport kicks everything up a notch, headlined with a 2.7-liter V-6 that’s force-fed by twin turbos. What does that do for a modest V-6 like the Fusion? Well, it spins the dyno a little faster, that’s for sure.
In Ford’s press release about the Fusion Sport, they say they are “adding serious EcoBoost® muscle to its Fusion sedan in an all-out assault on more expensive German sport sedans.” Let’s completely ignore the small potatoes like Toyota Avalon and Chrysler 300C. Let’s go pick a fight with the big dogs.
The Fusion Sport packs a punch with 325 horsepower. What’s more, it produces higher torque ratings — way higher — than comparable German sedans. A lowly Ford Fusion smokes the BMW 535i’s 325 lb-ft, surpasses the turbocharged Mercedes-Benz E400 3.0l, and even squeaks out a higher rating than the Porsche 911 Carrera S that twists out 369 lb-ft of torque. Yup, the Fusion Sport squeals the tires with 380 lb-ft of tread-burning torque.
What does that mean for the sport sedan lineup? Will Ford carve a spot out for themselves in the segment? After all, the Fusion Sport has AWD and will have absolutely no problem keeping planted on Terra Firma. And with the looks of the interior, Ford may just elevate this smooth operator straight into luxury sedan territory.
