The driver, 80-year-old Bob Riggle, said to Jay Leno, “This is only the second accident I’ve had in the 50 years of running this car.” Lucky for Leno, it happened on film for his show, Jay Leno’s Garage.
The pair were at the Irwindale Speedway in SoCal with Riggle’s 1967 Plymouth Barracuda. What made this day so special is that Bob was taking Jay for a drive. Jay had dreamed of this day since he was a kid. Why, you ask?
This particular Barracuda has a 468 cubic-inch Hemi engine that produces 2,500 horsepower! Under hard throttle, the front end lifts up like a hooker’s shirt and the wheelie bars are the only thing keeping this monster from flipping over backwards.
Unfortunately, this go-around with Jay Leno in the car doesn’t go as planned. There isn’t enough tarmac to stop after the front end comes down and Bob Riggle has to yank the wheel to the side. The car flips a couple of times in dramatic fashion.
Thankfully, everyone is okay and Jay has some phenomenal footage.
