Compact and subcompact cars like the Chevrolet Bolt, Nissan LEAF, Toyota Prius, BMW i3, and Tesla Model 3 typically come to mind in the electrified conversation. After all, those are the most popular models for electric and hybrid cars right now.
But the trend in the automotive market has been bigger vehicles – trucks and SUVs particularly. Everyone has taken notice, especially automakers, and you’re seeing a change in the market. New models coming out are larger and appeal to the general public, but also for fleet customers.
When you need passenger or cargo space than a compact car allows but still want the efficiency of an electrified vehicle, a larger EV or plug-in hybrid is a great option. Check out these models that are available now, as well as a few coming soon.
Available Larger Electrified Vehicles
Tesla Model X
Still the most popular EV manufacturer in North America, the Tesla Model X is at the top of the range. Available as a five-, six-, or seven-seater, the Model X sets the bar extremely high for comfort and performance. With models such as the P100D capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 miles per hour in 2.9 seconds, standard all-wheel drive, standard active driving features, and available full self-driving capability, it’s hard to look past the Tesla Model X. You’ll need to shell out at least $79,500 for a Model X.
Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV
Finally available in North America after being a best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is another good choice. Combining a 2.0-liter gas engine and a twin electric motor system, the Outlander PHEV can achieve 74MPGe. It’s also the first PHEV with CHAdeMO Fastcharge capabilities for its 12-kWh lithium-ion battery, which has a disappointing 22-mile all-electric range. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is versatile with seating for five, 78 cubic feet of cargo space behind the front seats, and it can tow up to 1,500 pounds.
MINI Cooper Countryman S E ALL4
A compact SUV model that’s a surprisingly fun-to-drive plug-in hybrid is the MINI Cooper Countryman S E ALL4. Its combined electric and gas horsepower is 221, with torquey acceleration off the line to bolster the turbo engine. With only 12 miles of all-electric range, it isn’t about to set electrified efficiency records but it’s a welcome help. For the Countryman S E ALL4’s $36,800 entry-level price tag, it’s a great way to get into the electrified market.
Chrysler Pacifica PHEV
For families or fleets that need more space, the Chrysler Pacifica PHEV fits the build. Seating for up to seven, cargo capacity behind the front seats of more than 140 cubic feet, and a fantastic assortment of tech and convenience features are what’s most notable for the Pacifica PHEV. Its 16-kWh Lithium-ion battery allows for up to 33 miles of all-electric driving range, and its combined horsepower is 287hp. It’s the first-ever plug-in hybrid minivan, and it’s popular because of its starting price – only $39,995.
Mercedes-Benz GLC 350e
For an upscale fleet experience, the Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class offers up the GLC 350e. A compact SUV with a luxurious interior, the GLC 350e has the classic touches you’d expect in a luxury German car with the added benefit of efficiency. Its 2.0-liter turbocharged gas engine and 85kW electric motor combine for a mind-blowing 320 horsepower and permanent all-wheel drive. The GLC 350e is integrated with some of the most hybrid-centric technology you’ll find, and with a price tag starting at $49,990.
The new Volvo XC60 steps into German luxury territory, and part of its lineup includes a plug-in hybrid powertrain. The Volvo XC60 T8 eAWD system has a combined 400 horsepower for knee-knocking performance and has an all-electric range of 17 miles. The Volvo XC60 has seating for five and over 63 cubic feet of cargo space, along with premium conveniences and Volvo’s intrinsic focus on safety, all starting from $52,900.
The Volvo XC90 is the world’s first seven-seat 400-hp SUV, and it’s a plug-in hybrid. Top driver assist systems, impeccable audio systems, and the finest of interior finishings are wonderful in the XC90. But what stands out even more is that it’s a more efficient SUV than its competition. While pushing 400 combined horsepower, the XC90 has an all-electric range of 19 miles and 62MPGe combined hybrid fuel mileage. $64,950 is the starting point for the XC80 T8 eAWD Plug-In Hybrid.
Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e
The premium experience can be found in the Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e, a midsize luxury SUV with outstanding features and performance. A 3.0-liter biturbo V6 and a plug-in hybrid electric motor combine for up to 436 horsepower, and acceleration from 0 to 60mph in just 5.2 seconds. The Mercedes-Benz GLE 550e integrates a new level of efficiency to its performance, but doesn’t for a second neglect the awesome interior comfort, convenience, and tech. It starts at just $66,700.
Porsche Cayenne S E Hybrid
In its second generation now, the Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid offers the combination of a sports car’s performance, the efficiency of a hybrid, and the versatility of an SUV. The luggage compartment has 27 cubic feet of cargo space, but much more fits in the backseat if necessary. Or, seat five adults comfortably. A 134-hp electric motor combines with a 335-hp turbocharged V6 for a max 455 horsepower. Granted, it won’t be hauling much more than people even with a 7,700lb towing capacity, but it’s an excellent choice for executives.
Electrify a Current Model
Since you won’t find an electric or hybrid variant in all models, it might be necessary to have it built for you. That’s what XLFleet does for you. An all-electric sporty SUV is coming to rival the Tesla Model X. The Jaguar I-Pace is expected to launch soon with production beginning in the second half of 2018. Concerned with bringing driving exhilaration to the EV market in a larger package, the Jaguar I-Pace will hold its own in performance. A 90kWh battery pack is also expected to provide more than 310 miles of range on a single charge, and priced in the mid $70’s.
Kia Niro EV
Based on the highly successful Kia Niro compact SUV, there will be a Kia Niro EV coming to market very soon. It shares much of its platform with the Hyundai Kona, which will offer an EV version at the same time. A 50kWh battery should mean all-electric travel of up to 200 miles on a charge is possible, all while offering the space and affordability of the compact SUV market.
Audi e-tron Quattro
A long-awaited model also expected later in 2018 is the Audi e-tron Quattro, and it’s going to be a direct competitor for the Jaguar I-Pace that arrives at almost the same time. It’s a premium SUV with similar proportions to the Q5, but without an internal combustion engine. A 95kWh battery pack should put the Audi e-tron Quattro in the 300-plus mile range rating.
